garmin gpsThis morning I watched a TV documentary on storm chasers and wondered if they use a Garmin GPS system to track the storms. Obviously, they can't put a Garmin GPS in a tornado, but it would be interesting to know if they were able to identify the latitude and longitude of where the storm is and how it moves across the countryside before it dissipates. Modern weather forecasting has come a long way because of computer modeling, and the storm chasers have a great deal to do with giving meteorologists good data for their modeling. If there were ways of collecting data about the path of storms using Garmin GPS, forecasters could make good predictions about the severity of it and let the public know who needs to get out of the area to be safe. I live in a part of the country that doesn't have many tornadoes but we do have straight line winds from time to time that are just as destructive. Being able to predict where and when these bad storms will hit would certainly save lives.
